The following is a guide to help you decide which font and size
to use for various printouts based on your printer type. If you are using a laser or ink jet printer, you have a little
more flexibility and can experiment with different fonts and sizes other than the ones listed. If you are using a dot matrix printer, please use the fonts listed below. Remember that 12 cpi is a font name,
not the font size. Common fonts are Roman 12cpi, Sans Serif 12 cpi, and Draft 12 cpi.
If you do not have any of these fonts listed, you will need to install a
different driver which includes these fonts.
Please print this page for easy reference.

Recommended Printers and Drivers
|
The following is a list of printers and drivers that we know
will and will not work with our software. General Note: You can set up several drivers for the same printer. If you
print from other software, go ahead and keep the original driver. To install a new driver, go to Start | Settings | Printers
and double click on Add Printer. Once it has been added, be sure to select that printer whenever you are in WinUltra.
You might even want to add WinUltra to the name of the printer (i.e. Epson DFX 5000 (WinUltra)).
Dot Matrix Printers
Epson Printers:
- DFX 8500. We DO NOT recommend this printer for
printing.
- DFX 5000. When installing this printer, be sure to choose the DFX 5000 driver and not the DFX 5000+ driver.
- LQ 1060, 1070. Do not choose a driver with the extension ESC/P 2. If you have the 1070, install the 1060 driver.
- LQ 2170, 2180. Choose LQ 1060, 1060+ , 1070, or 1070+.
Oki Data Printers:
- Oki Data Printers are infamous for emulating other printers. Please see
owner's manual to determine what the emulation is set to. If it is Oki Data,
choose the Oki Data driver for that printer.
Microline 320 & 321 - set to FX emulation. Use the Epson FX-286e
driver.
Microline 590 & 591 - set to LQ emulation. Use the Epson LQ 1060 or
1070 driver (see note above).
If your emulation is set to:
- Epson FX
- try the FX-286e or a driver recommended by the manual.
Epson LQ - try the LQ 1060 or LQ 1070 (see note above under Epson
Printers). - IBM - look in the manual for recommended drivers.
-
- If you no longer have the owner's manual, you can go to the Oki Data website
by clicking here.
Click on Solutions Support. Select your printer from the appropriate box. When the page appears, click on
User's Manual. Scroll through the page and look for a link related to Emulation. You should find information stating what the emulation is set to.
Panasonic:
- KX-P 3624 & 3626: Go to the Panasonic website and
download the 36242695.exe file. This will give you the
drivers you need.
Laser Printers
- As far as we know, there has have been few problems with
laser printers. If you are having trouble with lines being
cut off, you will need to check the Unprintable Area on the
printer. To do this, go to Start | Settings | Printers, right-click
on the printer and choose Properties. Click on the Paper
tab and the Unprintable Area button. You will have to
experiment on your own to get the right size.
HP LaserJet 4M - install as HP LaserJet III
- HP LaserJet 4 Plus - install as HP LaserJet 4
Ink Jet Printers
- Again, we have heard few problems. See Laser Printers above if you are experiencing problems.
We are frequently asked about printer issues. QDP does
not support printers, but many times it is difficult to determine
whether it is the printer, or a setting that has changed in the
software. If you are running into trouble with printing, and
you have followed the steps above, please look at the list below
before calling us.
Not Printing
What is not printing? If you are trying to print (any
printout) and nothing seems to be happening, here are a few things
to try:
- Check that you are selecting the correct printer and that
the printer is connected well. You may have to jiggle
the cables a couple of times, unplug and plug the connection
back in at the computer.
- Try exiting the program and coming back in. Or reboot
the computer. Make sure that the printer is on and on
line.
- Try printing the same printout with a different group.
If it prints, then there is something wrong with the first
group's data. Check file sizes. If it does not
print, then continue . . .
- Try printing a different printout. If it does not
print, then continue . . . (it is unlikely that one printout
will work and another won't)
- Exit WinUltra and go into a word processing program.
Type a sentence or two and try printing to that printer.
If it does not print, then there is something wrong with
either the printer, connection, or printer card.
- The next step would be to hook the printer up to a different
computer. If it does not print, try a different printer
cable. If that does not work, then it sounds like you
might need to fix or replace the printer. If it does
print, then it could possibly be the printer card (the place
where you plug in the printer cable on the computer). If
you have another printer around, try plugging it in. If
it doesn't work, then it is the card.
Again, QDP does not support printers, but this page is intended to help you narrow down the problem.
